Laser cutter engravers are one of those handy tools that every hobbyist or workshop should have. By offering you the flexibility to leave your mark on just about anything, they really are the easy way to get customizing. With so many on the market and so much to think about, it can be hard to know where to start. Fortunately, that's where I come in…
Not so long ago I did a lot of reading and research to try and find one that was perfect for me. So…to make things that little bit easier for you I've compiled the shortlist I looked at. Now when you want to know what to look for all you need to do is take a look at my list below. There's no rankings here my friend, just honest advice and opinion from yours truly. Enjoy the read!
Best Laser Cutter Engraver Machines
1. ORTUR Laser Master 2
The Ortur Laser Master 2, which costs as little as $389.99, is perhaps the easiest and cheapest laser cutter I've ever used.
Surprisingly, it is pretty simple to construct. It took me only about 15-20 minutes to put together and configure the machine before it became ready to start cutting it for the very first time. I found the15W-powered Laser Master 2's initial findings a bit unimpressive at best. However, with little experimenting and fine-tuning, it changed and proved to be quite capable.
Seamless Design
All I had to do was position the laser module on top of the runners of a square frame that is bolted-together on an extruded tube. Apparently, this allows the tool head to move around the work area in the X and Y axes, which is all controlled by the computer integrated with a 32-bit main unit and two other stepper motors. The design is quite simple. Nothing too sophisticated really.
How is the setup?
Opening the small box takes just about 10-20 minutes for an experienced guy like me. But even beginners can complete it after about 30-40 minutes. Once done, I plugged it into a computer and loaded the software I preferred. For me, Lasergrbl was the most convenient one to use. I tried it out with LightBurn but it failed to function on my PC and Mac. Then I switched to LaserGRBL and it worked perfectly with the Windows system.
2. Genmitsu CNC 3018-PRO
I was looking to get into some CNC and decided to order this machine. I watched some YouTube videos about the Genmitsu CNC 3018-PRO Router Kit GRBL Control and I was convinced this was the unit I needed to challenge myself with.
Good for the regular beginner
When I received my package, it came very well packaged, making it even easy to assemble. After downloading the drivers and software, I was ready to get into it all. But CNC is a continuous learning experience, and one may mess up a few times when getting started. Just like any CNC machine, all you have to do is direct the g code and it does what you programmed it to. This cutter handles every detail particularly well. It might not make deep fast cuts, but it will do the job very accurately.
Easy assembly
I bought this CNC cutter and I'm very happy with how easy it is to assemble. With just a few configurations, it will be up and running for you to do your first project. I got some end mills and they actually worked superb especially when cutting out huge projects such as aluminum.
3. Flux Beamo 30W Desktop Laser Cutter & Engraver
In my frame shop, I have several 3D printers, as well as a CNC router and other diode laser engravers. A CO2 laser cutter, on the other hand, is something I've always desired because it enables one to mark and cut a wide variety of materials with minimal setup and mess. As a result, I was looking forward to getting this FLUX Beamo 30W Desktop Laser Cutter & Engraver.
Compact, Easy and Straight to the point
Compared to other ordinary laser cutters that are heavy and bulky, Beamo does have dimensions as four normal sheets of paper which also weighs just under 50 pounds compared to the others.
Undoubtedly, Beamo is the most compact laser cutter to come out of FLUX. The Beamo is designed to be tiny while also being a lot capable. It is delivered in a single package that is simple to set up. The machine itself is contained in the box, along with everything you'll needs to configure. It includes a vent tube that directs the chemical fumes far from the machine.
Well integrated and versatile
Setting up the Beamo Laser Engraver is quite easy especially when using the vivid touchscreen. I could connect my machine via the Ethernet or use the Wi-Fi adapter to connect to my home network. The Beam studio software could also integrate with my macOS laptop, Windows and Linux if I wanted to. Beam Studio can be regularly updated and is quite easy to use because it provides various presets for different equipment. I had the option of choosing basic shapes to design some of my simple parts but could also access external vector formats such as DXF or SVG.
4. NEJE Master 7W Laser Engraver Machine
If you're relatively technologically savvy, this NEJE Master 7W Laser Engraver Machine can be quite convenient for your engraving needs. I do use this machine primarily to carve elegant patterns on bamboo, wood, organic boards, and more. As a craft designer, I can guarantee it has served its purpose – so far.
Safe to use
If I have to operate a complex machine, at least let it guarantee some safety measures. This engraver comes with an installed gyroscope protection system. Whenever the laser engraving machine is turned on, the integrated gyroscope records the initial operating position. To avoid an accident, the device will automatically cease operating if it is accidentally touched or shifted.
Convenient to use
This NEJE Master 7W Laser Engraver Machine may be promptly reset using the breakpoint memory function where one can double-check their work after pausing for a bit and then resuming operation from where you left off; the application allows you to modify the laser strength to your specific demands.
Easy configuration
The NEJE Master Laser has two processors and can run two firmware concurrently. When you run the software, the machine recognizes it and connects to it immediately. The NEJE Windows software and the NEJE Android APP function together in NEJE mode. This mode is appropriate for beginners because it is basic and can assist in the formation of high-quality works.
5. Foxalien LE-4040 PRO Desktop Laser Engraver 20W
LE-4040 PRO Desktop Laser Engraver is designed with fast assembly and is simple use. As an amateur, hobbyist or beginner, you can use this machine to explore the engraving world to create your own works and have some fun while you're at it. What makes this product a smarter choice:
It does the job
LE4040 comes with a 5000mW class 4 laser unit that can engrave and cut different types of material such as plywood, leather, cardboard, acrylic, etc. What's more is that the laser focus is adjustable but one has to always use protective wear while operating.
Its sos1000 laser power range can reach an optimum engraving speed of 3000 millimeters per minute which really helped out when I was doing some bamboo carvings. The belt-driven x and y axis helps reduce working noise.
Pretty easy to assemble
This laser engraver takes about 10 – 20 minutes to fully assemble. The main parts actually come pre-assembled and there is no complicated installation at all. I thought this was quite considerate especially for beginners and professionals who don't want a hassle.
Compatible software
FoxAlien LE-4040 is compatible with laser software such as GRBL, Grblcontrol (Candle), Lightburn, and more. I use Windows 10 but I found it convenient when I felt like using my MacOs just for curiosity. You can also use Windows XP (if you still do), Windows 7/8/10, and even Linux. It's all up to you there.
6. GanGou 3000mw CNC Pro DIY Logo engraver
I'm just starting a small woodwork business for my daughter and I figured I could start laser engraving wood items for her clients to sample and get inventory to start up the shop. I wanted to try out the Gangou Laser Engraving Machine because it was inexpensive and it showed me an idea of what I would expect when I laser it.
Easy assembly in just 10 minutes
When I took delivery of my engraving machine, the instructions were just plain and easy to understand. Even though the drive they sent had too much Mandarin language, I counted myself lucky because I know much about computers. This made it easy for me to laser my first item within a few minutes of opening the box. If you're not computer savvy, this machine may not be for you.
Basic software
The software might be basic for anyone to understand. For beginners, it might be even better. But for pros, it can seem a little annoying. There are no grid lines so you have to guess around the piece until it becomes what you want engraved. Unfortunately, it does not support MacOs. Instead, it works well with Windows operating system.
Great power and speed
I have used it a couple of times on cedar, maple, pine and hoop pine. The pine sap depletes when one lasers it to the point you can have really deep burns on the wood. If I configure it to 100% laser power and 20 for depth, it can cut 1/8 inches deep into the pine – which is quite dramatic. But the high-speed capability offers a thick base that can provide the high-quality acrylic with a smoother finish.
7. Bachin (500MW) DIY CNC Engraver Kits Wood Carving Engraving Cutting Machine
I'm not a talented artist when it comes to drawing with my hands. That is why I chose to use programs to help make my pictures look better. When I discovered that I could easily use a laser and make pictures directly on wood, I became more interested. But I thought if it was too easy, just about anyone could do it. After some research, I found Bachin DIY CNC Engraver would suit more. I liked it because:
Quick Assembly
When my engraver arrived, it was well packaged and it took me about 15 minutes to assemble. It was super easy because all I had to do was pay attention to the YouTube videos showing how to assemble it together. I could easily figure out which side you I should attach the parts to the plexiglass because the holes are located in different spots.
Tech Support
After getting it all together, I uploaded the software from the website. It didn't work the first time because I didn't really know much of it and got discouraged with a few fails here and there. I contacted Bachin tech support and they were literally a lifesaver. They helped me get better at my craft and were so responsive and quick to solve my problems. That was definitely a plus for me.
Is it worth it?
I could say that this engraver is definitely worth the money. As of now, I use both the 500mw and 2500mw versions. I can do great engravings using the 500mw when you get used to it. But you have to be sharp about it and take note of the different levels of engraving that come with different materials because not all wood brings the same results.
On the other hand, the 2500mw can cut 1/8 inch deeper of basswood as long as you get the settings right. I have used it to cut wood, paper, vinyl and even felt. It is all up to you to decide depending on the project you want to undertake.
8. BobsCNC E3 CNC Router Engraver Kit
BobsCNC knows a thing or two about making these types of a machine, which is why the E3 was a no-brainer. I was really impressed by the overall build quality of the device. It's clearly made by a team that cares about the end product.
SG20U rail system: is it the missing piece of the puzzle?
The rail system is impressive, to say the least. If you can't quite see why it's important, think of it like this: the rail guides the router. If you have the best software in the world, but there's too much play in the rails, then it'll all be for nothing. The rails are what help set the minimum step size which itself defines the resolution. Simple right?
Online manuals are extremely handy
When you invest in something that can do everything it can be hard to learn how to use it! That's why I really liked the online manuals. They are simple, easy to access, and easy to follow. That makes them the perfect learning resources for everyone from novices to experts.
How does the GT2 drive help the X and Y axes?
The drive on the in-plane axes is clearly built for the task at hand. It moves the router with minimal fuss and has more than enough power to get the job done. This makes it the ideal choice for the fine resolution and step size that set the E3 apart from the rest. I'd certainly recommend this as a strong selling point because it means that maintenance will be minimal. You're also highly unlikely to burn out the drive because it has plenty in reserve.
Reproducibility that will make you sit up and take notice
80 steps per mm are what the manufacturer quote for the step size. That makes the E3 one of the leading entries on my list for resolution and reproducibility. Two things that will make all the difference if you try to really push the limits of what you can engrave. I'd be happy to add an E3 to my workshop for this reason alone. Highly recommended for hobbyists and professionals alike.
9. ELEOPTION DIY Laser Engraving machine Laser Engraver Laser Cutter
This is a new name on the market so I was intrigued to see what they can offer. New names often bring new ideas which is why they're always worth close attention in my book. Let's see what I thought…
Full Windows support makes things nice and easy
Windows is fully supported all the way back to XP which is a nice touch. With the ability to get set up and ready in just a couple of minutes you shouldn't have too many issues. There's no explicit mention of Linux or Mac OS from what I could see. If this is a deal-breaker for you, then I'd suggest checking with the manufacturer. That way you'll be able to avoid disappointment if it transpires this is indeed a Windows-only device.
Can't engrave reflective materials…
Because of the way the UV light guides the router it won't be able to engrave reflective materials. It's not an issue with hardness ruining the hardware; it's because the router will get confused. The same can be said for many on this list, so this isn't unique to this contender. If you need to engrave glass, then I would seek specialist advice before making a purchasing decision.
Some assembly required: take your time
Assembly can always go wrong which is a bit of an issue. That said, the instructions were nice and clear, and it all made sense to me. With plenty of finely calibrated moving parts, what the folks here are really doing is ensuring they arrive safely. That means they remove a small number of them and pack them individually. Take your time with the manual, and you'll have everything up and running in no time at all.
170 x 200 mm engraving area
The engraving area isn't the biggest on this list which is a little bit of a shame. If you need something larger then obviously a different engraver may be a sensible choice. The quality created in this compact area is however first class. The reproducibility and detailing rivals all of the more established names, so I absolutely rate it in this respect!
10. Orion Motor Tech 60W CO2 Laser Engraver Cutter Cutting Engraving Machine
I love Orion products, so the Motor Tech was another obvious choice to take a look at. It comes with a big reputation, so I jumped straight in the moment I got my hands on one.
Huge working area of 20" x 28"
The working area is what will catch your eye: it's enormous! No, wait: it's gigantic! This makes it ideal for engraving sheet material as well as little things like pens. The resolution of the drives is suitable for the vast working area. Sometimes when you scale up the working area, you lose resolution if the machine is step limited. That's not the case here which is very pleasing to see.
Powerful enough to engrave ceramic and marble!
Marble is a tricky material to work with because of how hard it is. It's also prone to nasty inclusions of crystals which suddenly change its density. With 60 W of power, Orion has created something that will make short work of almost any material.
Built-in air compressor
One issue with laser cutting is that it generates a lot of waste heat in a highly localized area. This can then lead to thermal shock if you're not careful. The Motor Tech comes with a built-in air compressor as standard. By continually blowing cold air onto the cutting surface it keeps things cool with minimal fuss. That is an excellent touch because it ensures you can use it as a standalone machine shop instrument if you don't own a compressor.
Red dot is a simple guide that does the job
The red dot is a simple yet highly useful guide to the eye. By being able to see how your engraving is progressing with a quick glance, you can easily keep an eye on things. This is ideal if you're working on an irregularly shaped sheet where you need a few checks to ensure the alignment is correct. It's also a useful guide to the time that's remaining if you don't want to be sat in front of the computer the whole time. Highly recommended for the workshop that wants to take things to the next level.
11. Mophorn Laser Engraving Machine 40W CO2 Laser Engraver
Mophorn comes with a big reputation in the specialist field of high-speed cutting. By powering through without sacrificing the fine detail, they've carved (no pun intended) a real niche for themselves!
A CO2 laser: what does that mean?
Lasers are a complicated business, aren't they? They have a gain medium which is essentially a piece of material that works as the amplifier. (Laser = LASER = Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) This is often a gas. Then there will also be some cooling to ensure things don't get too hot. The main point to note here is that everything is safe and that the laser you choose will be designed for this specific type of work.
How did I get on with CorelDraw?
CorelDraw is a really nice bit of software from what I've seen. It makes it seriously easy to input your designs, and it's intuitive to boot! This made the whole process of learning a new system quite fun actually. Too often you can get sidetracked by annoying or confusing software suites. That wasn't the case here so I'd highly recommend it in this respect.
Works for both carving and cutting!
By using NewlySeal and NewylDraw, you can also switch between cutting and carving. That allows you to work at several different depths and get seriously creative. This is an excellent touch which means you'll get a lot more out of your latest purchase. Highly recommended if you like to have lots of flexibility.
High-speed cutting: up to 1.38 in/s
The cutting speed is impressive, to say the least. If you want to ensure that you're not waiting for what seems like hours, then this could be the machine for you. Please have in mind that this is the maximum speed. If you choose a hard material or one that's liable to heat fast, then you'll want to slow down. The software does a nice job of showing you what the machine can and can't do. This is all you can really ask for isn't it?
12. SHUOGOU 15000MW laser AS-5 Carving Machine
This is something I couldn't wait to tell you about. With the manufacturer claiming a resolution of almost 6 microns, it should be able to do 5-steps in the width of a human hair!
A mini engraver that packs a punch
Mini engravers always have a place in the market. Not everything has to be aimed at professional workshops or specialists. If you want to try something new to augment your home builds and crafts, then this is just perfect. It's small enough so that you don't need to sacrifice loads of worktop space. And you can also run it from your existing computer with minimal fuss. Sounds great right?
15 W of power but a whole host of choice
15 W is far from the highest power you'll see on this list, but it gets the job done. Too many people focus on getting the most powerful laser possible when what actually matters is the end product. Focus on the working area (14 x 20 cm) and the step size (6.25 microns). These are the two things that ultimately will make the most significant difference.
Plug and play: is it possible?
Yes! Plug and play is indeed the reality that I found! The drivers are simple to install, and you get talked through everything nice and quickly in the manual. They tell you just enough to get started so that you can learn by actually using the machine. It's so refreshing to find that approach because too often you get buried under unnecessary details.
Can engrave stainless and aluminum
Not every cutter or router on this list can work with metals so it's refreshing to find one that can. It's a great engineering coup that something so pocket-sized succeeds where others fail. This makes it ideal for all manner of experimentation that will keep a keen hobbyist entertained. Before pressing ahead with your purchase, I suggest double checking any specific material you plan on working with. The manufacturer can advise if there is a particular grade of stainless that has been problematic in the past for example.
13. TEN-HIGH CO2 40W 110V 300x400mm Laser Engraving Cutting Machine
I like TEN-HIGH products because they do precisely what you want them to and nothing more. What I mean by this is, they strip away all of the stuff that gets in the way and leave you with a simple to use piece of kit.
Powerful 40 W laser gets the job done
The 40 W laser has more than enough power to make short work of everything from wood to leather. The list of materials it can work with is extensive so make sure to check it prior to purchase. If you don't see your desired material(s) on there, then make sure to contact the manufacturer direct. They'll be happy to advise if my experience of dealing with them is anything to go by.
Impressive 300 x 400 mm working area
I'm impressed by the working area, and it should be perfect for sheet work. This is really nice because it opens up a whole host of new avenues of creativity for you to explore. You'll find it's easy to align and setup so learning the intricacies of the system shouldn't be an issue.
How useful are the video tutorials?
An installation video is a nice touch. It makes it very easy to make the small tweaks that you need to when you remove it from the packaging. Hopefully, in the future, they'll expand and add some useful tutorials as well. That would be a good way to learn as it would make things even clearer than the manual. Apologies if you guys have already done this since I wrote this!
How does it connect to your PC?
The connection is made by the classic USB connector that we all know and love! This is great because it means you don't have to buy an expensive cable or adapter that you'll throw away before long. Ideal for the plug and play solution that every workshop or hobbyist will be thankful for! I also liked how easy to install the drivers were. I found no compatibility issues and was thoroughly satisfied with how the setup wizard guided me through. Nicely done guys!
14. Orion Motor Tech 12x 8 Upgraded 40W CO2 Laser Engraver Cutting Machine
You'll recognize this name from a little earlier on in this article. I spoke highly of it so you won't be surprised to see that I've added its big brother to my list too. With a huge 12" x 8" working area it offers the ability to add sheet work to your repertoire: ideal really!
Not suitable for metals: perfect for organics
The 40 W laser has been specially tuned to work with organics. That means that while it won't be much help with metal engraving, it takes care of its specialist materials as well as anything on this list. Leather, wood, paper, they all look that little bit crisper and more detailed with the Orion. This is ideal if you know exactly what you want to do and are unlikely to experiment with different materials.
Water break protection is a smart safeguard
Water break protection is common sense when you think about it, but it's surprising it's still not a standard feature. The Orion makes a big deal of having it and rightfully so. You're always unlikely to spring a water leak, but if you do, then you'll ruin your engraving and do damage to your laser. The water is there to ensure that things don't get too hot during tooling. As you'll often set a run going and head off to do something else leaks can go undetected until it's too late.
Orion has added a simple safety feature where they detect drops in cooling pressure. A leak would drop the pressure as the water is shooting out and is no longer confined to the tubing. When this happens, the machine will switch off and go into a standby state.
A greatly improved working area
The working area is the biggest improvement over its little brother. Really this isn't so much an up-grade as it is the plus-sized version. Just like the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. One is not necessarily better than the other; it just depends on how big you want to go.
15. Superland 100W CO2 Laser Laser Engraver Engraving Cutting Machine
Now, this is something that's really aimed at those of you that mean business! By this, I mean the pros who want to add laser engraving and cutting to their tooling shop. This standalone unit requires floorspace, skilled operation, and it craves throughput. It has the look of a machine crying out for a space in a busy shop!
Up to 100 W of laser power encased in a safe glass tube
At 100 W the laser is up there with the most powerful on my list. It's also capable of an astounding 1 m/s cutting speed at full tilt. That makes it a sensible choice for those of you looking to monetize your engraving. I would say that a hobbyist would require a much smaller and less powerful machine. That's not a criticism by any means and if you want one go for it, but I'm just, being realistic.
0.01 mm motor precision is impressive
Anytime you can quote the precision around the 10-micron mark you've got my attention. This is especially impressive given the size of the working area (more on that in a minute). What I like is how the build quality gives you confidence. Look at each fixture and fitting, and you find something sturdy and robust. That is really nice because it tells you that you're not going to be spending the bulk of your time fixing it.
Engraving on an industrial scale
900 mm x 600 mm is quite something, isn't it! You'll not just be able to tackle sheet work; you'll be making full-blown signs! This is as big as they come which is why I'm suggesting its one for the pros who have the floor space.
Industrial grade air cooling does what it's designed to do
When you ramp up the power, you need to ramp up the cooling in parallel. Without it, your machine won't last long, so it is great it all comes built-in. This avoids time-consuming flow rate and cooling capacity calculations. Certainly something I don't have the head for!
Best Home Laser Cutter Engravers
16. Zowaysoon 50X65CM 7W Desktop Mini Laser Engraver
I have a soft spot for these desktop mini engravers don't I! What I love is that they open up an exciting new bit of tech to businesses and hobbyists alike. I know you'll have had your head turned by the 7 W, in the title, so let's see if I found that to be an issue.
The desktop approach: but does it have the power?
The power is indeed a lot less than others on this list, but honestly, it's not an issue. The manufacturer is clear on what materials it can and can't work with (more on that in a second), so there's no issue. You sacrifice speed a little bit, but that's more than made up for by the compact design. The reproducibility also doesn't suffer which is nice. The laser may be lower-powered, but it's focused to do the job at hand as well as anything.
Works well with stone and iron
Stone and iron can both be cut and engraved which is really nice for the hobbyist. That just goes to show that even though it only boasts 7 W, it uses it highly efficiently, to get the job done. Personally, I wouldn't have any reservations about it from a maximum or average power output perspective.
Up to 2 hours of continuous operation: how does that compare?
A 2-hour runtime is impressive from a device so small. This is another advantage of having a lower laser power. Because there is less power in the first place, the issues with heating are greatly reduced. This, in turn, should extend the lifetime of the moving parts as they heat up and cool down.
Ideal for hobbyists who want to try something new
I'd suggest this is ideal for hobbyists, or shops looking to expand and take their time. There's no use opting for a colossus of a machine you'll feel too daunted to use. Desktop solutions are a nice way to get a gentle introduction to this specialist area of tooling. Plus they don't eat up precious floor space when not in use!
17. 5500mW DIY Laser Engraving machine Laser Engraver Laser Cutter
Following on from the last one, I've added another desktop unit! This one is quite an unusual design, and it is very much a back to basics approach. See what I made of it and then give it some thought.
No Z axis?
There is no Z axis control here, only X and Y. That means that you'll only be able to do surface engraving. Carving will be out of the question so it's worth thinking about a few projects and what tooling they'll need. That way you can avoid disappointment and decide on what you really need out of your new hardware.
Limited to 0.5 mm resolution
The resolution here is not the best compared to others on this list if I'm honest. At 500 microns it's 50 times lower than some of the entries on this list. This would mean that if you really want to do fine detailing and curves, it may not be your first choice. That said, if you want to do fast coarse work, then it will get the job done from what I've seen.
In-house software is simple and intuitive
The software is not the easiest on the eye, but the back to basics approach has all the functionality you'll need. It's intuitive and easy to pick-up which is a real plus point. I must admit that the more I played with it, the more it grew on me. This is a good sign as it tells you that this a machine that you won't get frustrated with after a couple of weeks.
Can it work with metals and ceramics?
Unfortunately, it can't, but then again you could say the same for a number of the other entries on this list! It's not a big drawback if I'm honest. If you want something that cuts organics nicely but not to the highest possible precision then go for it. I'd recommend this as a training setup in shops looking to expand, or for the keen hobbyist. There's always a time and a place for these types of devices, you just need to have realistic expectations of what they can do.
18. KKmoon 500mw USB Laser Engraver Carver
This may seem like a fairly unusual addition given the power, but I thought why not give it a shot? There's always a market for something compact and efficient, especially for the hobbyists out there.
Communication is via micro USB
One potential downside is that there's no standard USB; only the micro is on there. That means that you may need to get an adapter to connect it to your PC or laptop. While this isn't the biggest issue in the world it's worth ordering one at the same time. That way you'll be able to use it straight out of the box without having to go back to the store for a cable.
An engraver, but is it a carver?
I can confirm this is not a carver folks. It just doesn't have the necessary power and degrees of freedom to work in 3D. There's nothing wrong with that as long as you know what you're buying when you part with your cash. If you expect to be able to do everything the more comprehensive models can do, then you'll be disappointed. If you keep your expectations realistic, then I think you'll be quite contented with your purchase.
A compact hobbyist's engraver
I'm including this section just to stress who I think should buy it. While it's not a feature as such, it is essential that people are aware of it. It's only my opinion, but I can't imagine anyone will disagree with me on this one. If you want to play with some new tech without sacrificing lots of floor space, then go for it. If you want to set up a full-time shop or studio, then some of the others on my list will be more suitable.
Candle software comes fully supported
Candle software makes things very easy when it comes to inputting your design. It's really nice that it is fully supported because it will give you an excellent introduction to the software side of things. A highly recommended piece of kit for those of you who are looking to try something new and take up a fun hobby.

These guys have been on my radar for a while now so what better time to introduce them to you! With a number of compact and reliable engravers on the market, they are fast making a name for themselves.
2.5 W of focused power: can it resolve fine details?
2.5 W is small compared to many on this list, but competitive with the desktop variants. What impresses me though is how well focused the beam is. Lasers are inherently collimated due to their low spectral density. That said; the way the beam is directed on the surface, in this case, is very impressive. It ensures clean and smooth lines from what I've seen: something you'll love to see in action.
Fast moving speed: what's the fuss about?
By fitting three stepper motors, they've ensured speed is never an issue. That is particularly useful given the experimental nature of this type of work. If you want to work through several iterations in an afternoon, you'll be able to no problem. This would also make it an ideal training tool for professional shops looking to train new hires. That's really up to you though folks; just a suggestion!
Some material restrictions you need to be aware of…
You're mainly constrained to organics, which for most of us means wood. Glass, ceramics, and metals are all out of the question, unfortunately. Make sure to check your specific requirements, and you won't run the risk of disappointment. Wood also makes a great material to start with because it's easy to work with and readily available. That makes it a great way to build your confidence before tackling more complex projects.
No restrictions on picture styles
Many people think that the small models won't be able to handle the same picture complexity. I'm pleased to tell you that the A3 puts those rumors to bed once and for all. With the ability to upload any style you want and see it take shape with a couple of clicks they do an impressive job. I think you'll find the speed and the flexibility very useful if you love to iterate in the early stages. Highly recommended for the hobbyist looking to master a new skill.

Radiance optics: will they work for you?
Manufacturers will tell you that to achieve the best resolution you need to buy additional optics. Their idea is that if you do you'll get a smaller spot size and thus more detail. What I like about these guys is that they give you all the tools from day one. Their Radiance Optics are specifically designed for the wavelength of light used. Perfect for avoiding the degrading effect chromatic aberrations can have on your final piece.
Durable drive belts extend the lifetime
With a unit this size, there's always the worry that you'll end up paying a lot for maintenance. Everything is bigger, and under more strain, so you may feel you need to save for maintenance. I took one look at the drive belts used for the axes and can tell you that, that won't be an issue. With plenty of mechanical strength and some impressive build quality, they look to have taken care of everything. Highly recommended if you want a piece of kit that will run and run and ask for very little in return.
Maintenance is made easier by the level of access to the back
Accessing the back of some of the larger engravers can be a real nightmare. They seem to be sealed in so that only a trained engineer from the supplier can fight their way in! The back panel here is easily removed so that you can do all the routine maintenance. That is especially important if you want to maximize throughput while minimizing downtime. I found the manual really helpful in this regard. One thing that would be nice to see in the future are some video tutorials. They'd really take things to the next level for me!

We're heading back to the desktops folks! This little woodcarver is ideal for all types of organic ma-terial. As a keen whittler and carver of all things wooden, I had to take a closer look!
30 x 40 cm working area is impressive for a desktop unit
For a desktop unit, this is a large working area to the say the least. If you want anything bigger then you're going to have to start looking at larger devices. I like that this gives you the option of engraving wooden signs and small decorative boards. Ideal if you want to make your house feel like a home.
Specialist wood cutter and carver that is easy to learn on
The whole machine is geared towards wood. Provided you don't expect to be able to work on glass, metal, and ceramic too then you'll be happy. Wood also makes a great material to start engraving and carving if you're a hobbyist. It's abundant, cheap, and nothing dramatic happens if it overheats. Take your time to create something with the A3, and you'll soon be a master engraver and carver.
500 mW is focused with intricacy in mind
Intricacy is something that sets a good print and an amazing one apart. The beam power is purposefully low so that it can take its time without overheating the wood. Little scorch marks at key points around a curve can really detract from the overall aesthetic. My main piece of advice here is to ignore that it is a low powered beam. Just enjoy the fact that you'd be working with something specifically designed for wood carving and engraving. Power isn't everything: it is the end result that absolutely counts.
How did I find the initial setup?
It was straightforward in my opinion. Every unit ships with a little assembly required at the other end. As we said above, that's just to protect critical parts. The instructions were simple, told we why I was doing what I was doing and took a couple of minutes to follow. That allowed me to build my confidence and start using it the day it arrived. Ideal!

Finally, we get to Kohstar. Now that I write this I think I may have left the best until last. If you want a 'do anything' machine that offers something different, then read on folks!
70 L/min of cooling flow: is it enough?
The cooling is undoubtedly more than enough for what you need. This is super important in the world of laser cutting because all sorts of heat and gas are produced. Because the laser is so highly localized, you won't even feel it when you stand next to the machine. But to the material that's being worked on it will feel like a furnace under the laser spot! Keeping things cool is the secret to smooth, clean, and reproducible work that you'll be proud to put your name to. Highly recommended because you won't have to source an external extraction and calculate heat loads.
Huge 400 x 600 mm working area
The working area is right up there with the very biggest on this list. That makes it ideal for doing sheet work as well as unusually shaped one-off pieces. If you love to experiment and iterate, then you'll have more than enough space in which to do it. Just be sure to measure up first to ensure you have enough travel. Even the largest machine can get filled up quickly by your latest grand design!
Optional rotational axis is a unique feature
Now, this is the cool part I've been waiting to tell you all about! The addition of a rotational axis means you can work on cylinders and spheres. That means that you'll be able to trace out all sorts of patterns with the click of a button. After seeing it in action, I have to say that I'm really surprised more companies aren't fitting these. They wouldn't even have been a standard option; just an optional extra.
What does fully adjustable really mean?
You can change everything from the laser power and the spot size to the speed and the user height. I really like this approach and would suggest it makes it ideal for use in a professional workshop. If you have a whole range of projects to get through it makes sense to optimize the engraver for each one. After all, a power and speed that works for one material won't necessarily be the best choice for another material.
23. OMTech 40W CO2 Laser Engraving Cutting Machine
I won't even exaggerate it but the OMTech Laser Engraving Cutting Machine is quite complicated. But is it good? As long as you know what you're doing, then yes.
How is the power?
The 40 watts does cut metal, but if you're asking this question then you sincerely need to do more research because this might not be the machine for you. If you're looking for a turnkey product that you can just turn on and cut the end product, then you have to understand that laser cutters might not yet be your thing.
Can you see the laser beam when you're cutting?
Please don't. You might go blind. Don't even think it's easy to find an interlock that can turn off the laser when you think of opening the working chamber. Lasers are quite dangerous. But this machine is quite secure as it keeps one from getting harm by the laser, which could actually be a good choice for you.
Is it any good?
If you are an experienced technician, it might be a good idea to upgrade its controller and get better images and curves. This machine is just a standard laser power engraver but you have to always know what you're doing to get the perfect end product you want.
